What Is Skimming?

A skilled plasterer applies the skim in two passes, trowelling each layer while the material is still workable. The timing of the second coat and the final trowelling — known as closing — is what separates a professional finish from a rough one. Our Skimming Process

   Assessment and Quote

   Preparation

   Surfaces are cleaned, any loose material is removed, and the area is primed or PVA'd to control suction. On plasterboard, joints are taped and corner beads are fixed where necessary. Surrounding areas are protected with dust sheets.

   First Coat

   The first thin layer of finish plaster is applied evenly across the surface using a steel trowel. This coat fills minor imperfections and establishes the base for the second pass.

   Second Coat and Closing

   Once the first coat has firmed up to the right consistency, the second coat is applied. The plasterer then works the surface — trowelling and flattening — until it is smooth, flat and free of marks. This closing stage is where experience is critical.

   Clean Up

   We clean up at the end of each day and remove all materials and equipment on completion. We advise on drying times and preparation for decoration before leaving site.
