Rendering for the Rhondda's Distinctive Terraced Properties
The Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach valleys contain some of the most recognisable domestic architecture in Wales. The long rows of terraced housing that climb the valley sides — built during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to house colliery workers and their families — are distinctive in both their form and their challenges. These properties were built densely, often on steep ground, from local stone or brick, and many were rendered in traditional sand-and-cement finishes that are now well over fifty years old. Decades of exposure to the wet, westerly-facing weather that funnels up the valleys has taken its toll on most of these surfaces. Cracking, hollow patches, damp penetration, and the gradual failure of painted finishes are common problems that we see regularly on Rhondda properties.
We work with these properties frequently and understand both their character and their specific vulnerabilities. The terraces of Tonypandy, Llwynypia, Treorchy, Cwmparc, Porth, Ynyshir, Ferndale, and Maerdy are all within our regular working area, and we're well practised in the preparation and application methods that suit older valley housing.
Why the Rhondda's Climate Makes Silicone Render the Right Choice
The Rhondda valleys experience some of the highest annual rainfall in South Wales. The narrow valley geography concentrates and channels weather systems, and properties on the upper valley sides are particularly exposed to driving rain and strong winds. For the older terraced stock that makes up the majority of housing in the area, this persistent moisture exposure is the primary enemy of the exterior fabric.
Traditional sand-and-cement render becomes increasingly porous as it ages, and once cracks develop — which is inevitable given the thermal movement of older brickwork — water finds its way behind the render face and begins to cause damage from within. Silicone render solves this problem at its root. Applied correctly over a reinforced base coat, it creates a hydrophobic surface that sheds water rather than absorbing it, while remaining vapour-open so that the wall can breathe. The result is a surface that actively protects the building from moisture ingress rather than simply decorating it. In a climate like the Rhondda's, that performance difference is meaningful.
Stripping Back and Starting Fresh
On many Rhondda terraces, the existing render has been patched, painted, and patched again over many decades, creating a surface that is uneven, poorly bonded in places, and no longer fit for purpose as a weather barrier. In these cases, the right approach is a full strip back to the original substrate — removing all of the old render, assessing the condition of the underlying masonry, making any necessary repairs, and then building up a proper new render system from scratch. This is more work upfront, but the result is a surface that will last for decades rather than requiring ongoing maintenance and further patching.
We use a polymer-modified base coat reinforced with fibreglass mesh, which provides the structural integrity and crack resistance that the finished render depends on. The silicone topcoat is then applied in the chosen colour, blending cleanly into the surrounding streetscape or providing a fresh, contemporary look depending on your preference. The range of colours available in silicone render is extensive, and the colour is held in the product itself rather than applied as a paint coat on top — so it will not peel, fade unevenly, or need repainting.
Communities in the Rhondda We Serve
We cover both valleys in full. In the Rhondda Fawr that includes Porth, Tonypandy, Llwynypia, Clydach Vale, Treorchy, Cwmparc, Treherbert, and Blaenrhondda. In the Rhondda Fach we work across Ynyshir, Wattstown, Tylorstown, Ferndale, Maerdy, and Pontygwaith. We're based in Llanbradach, Caerphilly, and can reach Porth and Tonypandy in around 30 minutes, with the upper valleys a little further. We won't claim the upper Rhondda is on our doorstep, but it is firmly within our working area and we visit regularly.
Get a Quote for Your Rhondda Property
The easiest way to start is to send us a WhatsApp message with photos of the property. Valley terraces can vary considerably in their current condition and the work involved, so photos help us give you a realistic initial indication before we arrange a free survey. We're happy to talk through options and give you honest advice about what the job involves — including whether a full strip-back is necessary or whether the existing substrate is suitable for an overlay system. There's no obligation after the survey, and we'll always explain our recommendations clearly.
