What Is Silicone Rendering?
Silicone render is a polymer-modified, ready-mixed exterior coating applied to the outside walls of a building. It combines silicone as a key ingredient with aggregates and pigments to produce a finish that is highly water-repellent, flexible and colour-stable over time.
Unlike traditional sand and cement render, silicone render does not need painting after application — the colour runs throughout the mix. This means that minor scuffs and chips are far less noticeable, and you avoid the ongoing cost of repainting that a painted render finish requires.
Silicone render is available in a wide range of grain sizes and colours, from a very fine 1.0 mm grain for a smooth, contemporary look through to a 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm grain that gives a more textured finish. The final appearance depends on the grain size and the technique used to apply it.
Why Choose Silicone Render?
South Wales weather is demanding. Properties face driving rain, strong winds and significant temperature variation across the seasons. Silicone render is specifically well-suited to these conditions because of its combination of water resistance and flexibility.
Where traditional render can become brittle and crack as a building moves slightly with temperature changes, silicone render remains flexible enough to accommodate this movement without cracking. This makes it particularly effective on older properties where slight building movement is expected, and on newer properties built with lightweight construction materials.
Key Benefits
- Weatherproof: The silicone component creates a highly effective barrier against rain penetration, helping to keep moisture out of the building fabric.
- Flexible: Silicone render flexes rather than cracks when a building moves with temperature changes, giving it a longer service life than cement-based renders.
- Low maintenance: Through-colour finishes do not need painting and are resistant to algae and mould growth, reducing the frequency of cleaning and maintenance.
- Self-cleaning: The water-repellent surface causes rain to sheet off the wall, washing away dust and grime rather than allowing it to build up. Over time this keeps the finish looking cleaner.
- Wide colour range: Silicone render is available in a broad range of colours. We can help you choose a shade and grain size that suits the property and the surrounding area.
- Breathable: Despite its water resistance, silicone render remains vapour-permeable, allowing moisture that is already within the wall to escape rather than becoming trapped.
Our Silicone Rendering Process
The quality of a silicone render finish depends heavily on preparation. Rushing this stage leads to adhesion problems, cracking and failure of the finish. We take the time to do it properly.
-
Surface Assessment
We inspect the existing substrate — whether brick, block, existing render or EPS insulation board — and identify any defects such as cracks, loose material, damp or efflorescence that need addressing before rendering can begin.
-
Preparation
Any defects are repaired. Loose or failing render is removed. Surfaces are cleaned and any biological growth is treated. We apply a suitable primer or PVA bonding agent to optimise adhesion of the render system.
-
Base Coat Application
A reinforced base coat is applied to the prepared surface. This provides the structural layer of the render system and is reinforced with fibreglass mesh at vulnerable points such as around window and door openings to help control cracking.
-
Priming
Once the base coat has cured, a primer coat is applied. This helps the top coat to bond correctly and ensures an even absorption rate across the surface, which is important for a consistent final colour.
-
Silicone Top Coat
The silicone render top coat is applied by hand and worked to the correct texture using a float. The technique used at this stage determines the final surface texture — we take care to achieve a consistent finish across the entire elevation.
-
Final Inspection & Clean Up
We check the finished surface carefully, remove all materials and equipment, and leave the site tidy. We are happy to walk you through the work before we leave.
Areas We Cover
